Michigan faces an estimated shortage of 18,000 nurses in the next five years. Bachelor’s degree nursing programs at four-year colleges and universities cannot accommodate all the students who want to attend. The state should allow community colleges to offer bachelor’s degrees in nursing.

The two-year schools now offer associate’s degrees in nursing that can lead to a student becoming a registered nurse. But increasingly, hospitals and other health care organizations prefer registered nurses to have four-year degrees, according to legislative testimony noted in a state House Fiscal Agency analysis.

Self Regional Healthcare began as Self Memorial Hospital in 1951 and was built to be one of the most advanced hospitals in the country. Local business leader and philanthropist James C. Self personally oversaw the construction and recruited top physicians from across the country.

The commitment to provide advanced care with leading edge technology continues today.

We’re still an independent, not-for-profit hospital governed by a board of trustees comprised of community members. The difference is that we’ve grown into a major referral and medical center that provides advanced healthcare services to a population of more than a quarter of a million people.

At one time or another, everyone in the surrounding seven counties has been touched by Self. From a broken arm, to the birth of a child or chemotherapy, Self was always there. And we’re still close to home with the latest technology and finest doctors. To separate Self from the community would be impossible. Community is a huge part of what we are, which explains the great sense of pride we feel when people say “I am Self.”

San Juan Regional Medical Center is a 240 bed acute care hospital with a level III trauma center located in Farmington, New Mexico. In August 2006, an $83 million expansion was completed which added 72 new private patient rooms, most with fresh air balconies. The expansion also added 8 new operating suites, all with ceiling-mounted boom technology, a new public cafe, a healing garden, a well equipped staff/physician exercise room, and a new Central Sterile Processing facility. The older part of the facility is undergoing renovation, with all patient rooms being converted to private. Much of the renovation is completed, including the new staff-only cafe, and a spacious Cardiac and Pulmonary Gym.

We realize that it takes more than technology and a modern facility to treat people. At San Juan Regional Medical Center a team of dedicated well-trained professionals continually deliver quality health care. For our team members, it’s about successfully blending skill, commitment and compassion in the course of caring.

In 1998, The University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, KS, was faced with a patient satisfaction rate in the fifth percentile, turnover rates that were through the roof, and the reality of an organization that was losing market share.

As part of the organization’s strategy to turn the hospital around, nursing set out to change the culture of the department. A renewed commitment to quality improvement, nursing excellence, and staff engagement—along with a six-part strategic plan—effected culture change that transformed the organization. Since 1998, the hospital has seen a 60% decrease in turnover, a 65% increase in inpatient admissions, and more than 200% increase in revenue.
