Waiting in the emergency room with my grandmother once, I noticed a worried
Hispanic woman holding her baby in her arms and desperately signaling to a
nurse that something was wrong with her child. The concerned nurse asked the
woman a series of questions then realized that neither of them understood
each other. The nurse tried her best to let the woman know that there was
not a Spanish translator available. I was sixteen years old at the time but
seeing the woman’s discouraged and panicked face, I wanted to help. I
dedicated myself to studying and learning both spoken and written Spanish
and have found opportunities to use those skills. I am now a tutor for
Hispanic students and enjoy every minute of helping them build their
confidence in school and realize that they are very smart and capable. There
are many ways that speaking both English and Spanish have proven helpful and
beneficial. I want to be a part of the nursing field and use this skill to
serve others. Also, organization is an integral part of being a nurse
because it means always being prepared. I am dedicated to serving others,
well organized, and carefully precise. These are the things that motivate me
to be a nurse.

Future Nursing Profession

I have had the dream and goal of becoming a nurse for quite some time now.
This aspiration not only comes from several other women in my family,
including my mother, who have professions in the medical field, but because
I have always noticed my strong points being in mathematics and the
sciences. My career goal for wanting to be a nurse really set in for me in
the summer of 2005. I was a junior volunteer at a local hospital, even
though I was able to be in the nursery where people are usually always
happy, the experience allowed me to see what being a nurse is all about. I
also have experience working as a Patient Care Assistant at that same
hospital where I got to see a little bit of a different side of nursing
where you can have up and downs. Even though you will be faced with
stressful situations as a nurse, you will develop your own way of handling
those situations and be able to go home at the end of the day feeling
accomplished and confident.
I do plan on furthering my education after receiving my Bachelor’s
Degree, whether I go the route to be a Nurse Practitioner or I decide to go
into anesthesia, I plan to be great at any career that I pursue in the
medical field and put all of my effort into reaching my goals. I believe
that continuing education will allow me have more options and find what
which position makes me the happiest. I will also have to consider how my
career will affect my family because I want them to also be able to reap the
benefits of my continued education and happiness.
It takes a special person with the right attitude and ambition to be in
health care. You do not just wake up one day and decide you want to be a
nurse, it is a calling. A nurse must be strong and courageous, but also
sensitive to be able to meet the needs of a patient, and I believe that I
have all of those qualities in me.

Nursing Education

My name is Rae Lynn Smith and I am currently awaiting decisions from
Samford and UAB’s School’s of Nursing. The only hitch, determining how I
am going to finance my education. You see, I am a divorced mother of an
8-year old son and even though I dream of becoming a nurse, I know that
without furthering my education, I will never be able to truly provide well
for my son.
I currently hold a BS is Biochemistry from the U of Wisconsin and my GPA
is 3.3. I know that I am capable of completeing a nursing program, it’s
just financing it!
I see myself finishing an accelerated second degree BSN program or
accelerated BS to MSN track and working for a year or more in a hospital
setting. Then I would like to return to school to further my education as an
advanced practice nurse, an NP or CRNA. After working in that field for many
years, then I would like to continue my education, receive a PhD. and become
a nurse educator at a university. This way, I can talk to students about the
experiences I have already had and help them to become nurses in varying
capacities.
All in the world I need is help, financially. If I had my schooling paid
for, then I would have no problem. I can work hard, I can sacrifice, I can
do the work, both in the lab and academic settings, but I can not do it
without help.
Please, if there is any help available that anyone out there knows about,
I would be most grateful for the information.
Thank you.
